How to better explore Islamic studies and the topic of radicalization

Sorbonne University is one of six projects approved on February 19 by the French Ministry for Higher Education as part of an effort to boost education and research in Islamic studies and the topic of radicalization.

27 projects were put forward, with the purpose of enlightening society on the divisions that run through it and on radicalization factors. The French Ministry has opted to appoint a lecturer-researcher in the didactics of the Islamic religion for the beginning of the 2016 academic year at one of the 11 Sorbonne University member institutions. This lecturer-researcher will be linked to the École supérieure du professorat et de l’éducation (ESPE – a graduate school for teaching and education) of the Académie de Paris.

This call for projects came as part of La grande mobilisation de l’école pour les valeurs de la République (the major mobilization of schools regarding the values of the French Republic) initiated by the Minister for Education, Najat Vallaud-Belkacem, following the attacks of January 2015 on Charlie Hebdo and the kosher supermarket in Porte de Vincennes in Paris.
