The corporate R&D event

On November 18-19, 2015, Sorbonne University attended the Rendez-vous Carnot, an incredible opportunity for companies to meet their future R&D partners and support their innovative initiatives.

The Rendez-vous Carnot are one of the largest business conventions in France, bringing together public laboratories and manufacturers to network in B-to-B meetings. Every year, it hosts more than 9,000 business meetings resulting in some 750 signed contracts. 2/3 of the companies in attendance are small- to medium-size businesses, and 1/3 are large manufacturing groups. After 5 years in Lyon, the event was held in Paris this year on November 18-19 at the Cité de la Mode et du Design.
Sorbonne University participated in the Rendez-vous Carnot for the first time as a “partner” to promote its research teams, mainly from UTC and UPMC.

Rundown of the 2015 convention

25 research teams attended (see attached table), representing 3 cross-disciplinary topics: engineering for health, computing and simulation, and communicating objects. The teams were provided with 4 meeting booths (3 topic-specific plus 1 multi-topic, see photos) as well as an institutional booth, giving Sorbonne University the largest presence of any association of higher education institutions at the event.

Highlights included:

  • 176 meeting requests were made by manufacturers interested in meeting our laboratories, or vice versa. Some research teams were particularly active in requesting meetings (Lip6, LJLL, LIB, Roberval; see attached table).
  •  62 meetings took place during the event itself with SU teams: 1/4 UTC and 3/4 UPMC (50 meetings were scheduled in advance and 12 more were added on site).
  • 80% of the meetings were to discuss public/private collaborations and transfer: 56% with manufacturers (SAFRAN, Renault, PSA, PERTIMM, Bertrandt, SEB, etc.), 24% with transfer agencies (Carnot, SATT, ANRT), 18% with academic laboratories, and 2% with other entities.
